Who: Children of Ecuador is a non-profit organization based out of Alberta Canada, which assists with the educational development of children in the third world area of La Florida and Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador. The Foundation strives to create opportunities and choices for the children in the area through scholarships, development and improved education.
David Oldham, Director of the Children of Ecuador Foundation, together with his sister Catherine founded the organization in the fall of 2004 after a two month volunteer teaching experience in Bahia de Caraquez and La Florida, Ecuador. He is also a high school teacher at Spruce Grove Composite High School in Alberta, Canada.
Catherine Oldham, Marketing Director of the Foundation, has great experience in the Edmonton marketing field, and will be heading up many of the Foundation's fundraising ventures!
What: Children of Ecuador Foundation provides educational opportunities to children from the very poor area of Bahia de Caraquez and La Florida Ecuador. To date the Foundation has provided six academic scholarships, built a bathroom, shower, water facility and built a kitchen and eating area for the students of Escuela Una de Octobre in La Florida.
Through fundraising initiatives and individual donations the Foundation will continue to sponsor academic scholarships and building projects in order to enhance the learning experience of the children.
Where: Bahia de Caraquez is located on the western coast of Ecuador. La Florida is a small farming community 30 minutes outside of the city. Escuela Una de Octobre is the only school in the community and is a scenic 30-minute walk off the highway. Bahia is officially recognized as an Eco City and is taking great measures to sustain wildlife and forestation. The community is working towards improving access to clean water, which is a major challenge in maintaining the health and wellness of the people.
When: Right now!! The Foundation is currently supporting scholarships and building projects. Surf over to the Pictures page to see current and past projects!
Why: The individuals involved in the Foundation believe that being born in a wealthy nation is a privilege that millions of other humans were not afforded. It is our responsibility to make a contribution to their lives, and connect with them in ways that will make lasting impressions. Contributing to efforts to enhance the lives of individuals that are less fortunate than us is a remarkable way to leave a lasting positive impression on our world. There is so much that can be done for these children. That is why the Foundation was created and inspires people to believe, “You can change the world...one child at a time!”
